Hawaiian People xiv. 91 The ukeke was a strip of flexible wood or bamboo, mounted with two or three strings of olona or of cocoanut fiber. 1970Western Folklore XXIX. 239 The guitar was introduced [into Polynesia]..in 1879 by Portuguese immigrants, the only native stringed instrument being the two- or three-stringed ukeke, which was never played with a slider. 1980New Grove Dict.
