gravigrade, a. and n. Zool.|ˈgrævɪgreɪd| [f. mod.L. Gravigrada (see below), f. gravi-s heavy + grad-ī to step, walk.] A. adj. ‘Walking heavily’; of or belonging to the extinct edentate group Gravigrada, which, includes the Megatherium and the Mylodon.
1884in Cassell. B. n. A name formerly given to heavy-paced animals, such as the elephant; now, an animal of the group Gravigrada (see A).

Blainville and Duméril consider the dinotherium to have been allied to the lamantins, or ‘aquatic gravigrades’. 1899Westm.
