† alan1 Obs. Also alaun(t, alant, allan, allaund, aland. [a. OFr. alan, alant, allant; cf. It. and Sp. alano, Pg. alāo, med.L. alanus.] A large species of dog used to hunt or bait wild animals; a wolf-hound.
