Any of various eukaryotic, photosynthetic algae, chiefly of freshwater and terrestrial habitats, which have similar pigmentation to the higher plants, with green chloroplasts containing two specific types of chlorophyll; esp. an alga of the division Chlorophyta. Usu. in pl.
