A musical instrument consisting usu. of a gourd with a serrated surface, the rubbing of which produces a rasping sound.

Anthropologist XI. 344 An instrument of this class which has seemed to be confined to the West Indies..is called the guira, and is made of a gourd varying in size in different instruments...
