In Cartography, (plur.): The lines used in hill-shading to indicate the more or less steep slope of the surface. Also attrib. as in hachure lines.
1858Merc. Marine Mag. V. 173 The scale of shade is made to express the degree of slope by the strength of the hachure lines.1878Huxley Physiogr. 12 If the ground is steep, the lines, or hachures, are drawn thick and close together, so that the hilly spots become dark.1887J.
