A system of codes and symbols for labelling hazardous chemicals that are transported or stored in bulk, in order that they may be identified easily and handled safely, esp. in an emergency. Usu. attrib. Occas. in extended use: a hazardous chemical. Cf. hazmat n.
The system, originally voluntary, was developed by the London Fire Brigade and first became compulsory in the UK in 1979. The UK labelling includes the United Nations four-figure substance identification number, and a code by which emergency services can identify appropriate procedures in the event of an accident.
