ˈhead-stick †1. An ancient piece of artillery. Obs.
1549Compl. Scot. vi. 41 Slangis, and half slangis, quartar slangis, hede stikkis, murdresaris. 2. Naut. ‘A short round stick with a hole at each end, through which the head-rope of some triangular sails is thrust, before it is sewed on. Its use is to prevent the head of the sail from twisting’ (Smyth Sailor's Word-bk.).
