alkahest|ˈælkəhɛst| Also alc-, alch-. [first used in med.L. by Paracelsus, and believed to have been arbitrarily invented by him with a form simulating Arabic. Used in the same forms in most of the European languages.] The ‘universal solvent’ of the alchemists.
