An administrative division of a fu or department, or of an independent chow or district; also, the seat of government of such a division. Also attrib.
1837Penny Cycl. VII. 77/1 The subordinate cities and districts of each province in the three ranks of Foo, Chow, and Hien, are under the charge of their respective magistrates, who take their rank and titles from the cities they govern. 1901Westm.
