Gr. ἱεραρχία the power or rule of a ἱεράρχης (hierarch), episcopate. The initial Gr. ι-, treated consonantally in late L., gave j, g, in the Romanic langs., and so in ME. The later β forms, like mod.F. hiérarchie, are directly ad. L. hierarchia.]
