Hollerith|ˈhɒlərɪθ| The name of Herman Hollerith (1860–1929), American inventor, used esp. attrib. in reference to the use of punched cards in accounting, statistics, etc. Hence as n., used fig. in reference to modern society viewed as a processing machine (see quot. 1957).
