An instrument for the detection of sound by water; also of water, or of something in water, by sound. a. A bag containing water, placed between the stethoscope and the chest, to intensify the sounds heard in auscultation. b. (See quot. 1887.) c. An instrument devised to give warning by electricity to a port or fleet of the approach of a hostile vessel.
