hyperbaric, a. Med.|haɪpəˈbærɪk| [f. hyper- 5 + Gr. βαρύς heavy + -ic.] a. Of a solution for spinal anæsthesia: having a greater density than the cerebro-spinal fluid.
1930W. H. Jones in Brit. Jrnl. Anæsthesia VII. 110, I shall use the terms hyper-, iso- and hypo-baric, to describe solutions which have specific gravities greater than, equal to, or less than that of the cerebro-spinal fluid. 1946J. L. Southworth et al. Pitkin's Conduction Anesthesia xvii. 761/2 The anesthetist should know in advance whether the anesthetic solution is hypobaric, hyperbaric, or isobaric, so that the posture of the patient can be regulated accordingly. 1962J. Adriani Chem. & Phys. Anaesthesia (ed. 2) xxxi. 652/2 Hyperbaric solutions gravitate caudad if the body is inclined in the head-up, supine position after injection, while hypobaric solutions migrate cephalad. b. At a pressure greater than normal (often, greater than the partial pressure of the gas in the atmosphere); employing or pertaining to such gas.
1963Lancet 16 Nov. 1022/1 It is our firm impression that hyperbaric oxygen is the most effective method of resuscitation yet devised for the severely asphyxiated newborn infant. 1965Economist 20 Feb. 780/2 Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have been used increasingly in the treatment of diseases involving oxygen deficiency. 1966Lancet 24 Dec. 1394/2 A hyperbaric chamber was made from a large domestic pressure cooker. 1968Sci. Jrnl. Nov. 64/2 Some kidneys survived when hyperbaric nitrogen was employed. 1972Lancet 22 Sept. 639/1 Patients with advanced growths are being given hyperbaric oxygen (3–4 atmospheres absolute) for a period immediately before and during irradiating. 1973C. Bonington Next Horizon xiv. 199 The following six weeks passed..in hospital, recovering from frost-bite. I spent much of the time as a guinea-pig for a new method of treatment called hyperbaric oxygen, which entailed hours spent lying in a cylinder filled with two atmospheres of oxygen. You had to wear a special anti-static tunic..apparently, in oxygen so pure and concentrated, even the slightest static electricity could have caused a fire. |
