impsonite Min.|ˈɪmpsənaɪt| [f. Impson, the name of a valley in Pushmataha Co., Oklahoma + -ite1.] An asphaltic mineral similar to albertite.
1901G. H. Eldridge in Ann. Rep. U.S. Geol. Survey XXII. i. 265 This differs from albertite, however, sufficiently, it is thought, to warrant a distinctive name, and for this, impsonite is suggested, after the valley in which it is chiefly found. 1951E. N. Tiratsoo Petroleum Geol. xi. 292 Impsonite..seems to be a kind of end-product in the process of bitumen formation, having a very high proportion of fixed carbon and being infusible. 1965E. T. Degens Geochem. Sediments v. 263 One may distinguish between the asphaltic, e.g. wurtzilite, elaterite, albertite, and impsonite, and the nonasphaltic pyrobitumens. |
