vimentin, n. Biochem.|vɪˈmɛntɪn| [f. L. vīment-um wickerwork + -in1.] A cellular protein found in a wide variety of cell types, usu. as a constituent of the intermediate filaments of the cytoskeleton.
1978W. W. Franke et al. in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. LXXV. 5034/2 Cytoskeleton preparations from such cells are enriched both in intermediate filaments and a polypeptide of Mr 55,000–58,000... In order to emphasize the difference between this protein and proteins from other intermediate filaments, we propose the name vimentin. 1980Nature 17 Jan. 252/2 Vimentin was first characterised as a 52,000–MW, major subunit of intermediate filaments in chick embryo fibroblasts. 1984Holtzman & Novikoff Cells & Organelles (ed. 3) ii. xi. 287 Had the cells..been stained to locate tubulins instead of actin, vimentin, or keratin, they would have shown numerous microtubules. 1989B. Alberts et al. Molecular Biol. Cell (ed. 2) xi. 665 In avian red blood cells..vimentin is thought to bind indirectly to the plasma membrane by binding to ankyrin. |
