ionone Chem.|ˈaɪənəʊn| [ad. G. ionon (Tiemann & Krüger 1893, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. XXVI. 2693), f. Gr. ἴον violet + -one.] a. Either of two liquids (α-ionone and β-ionone) that are used in perfumery for their strong odour of violets and are isomeric cyclic ketones, (CH3)3C6H6CH:CH·CO·CH3, differing only in the position of the double bond in the C6H6 ring. Ionone is a proprietary name in the U.S.
1894Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LXVI. i. 82 When pseudoionone is heated with dilute sulphuric acid and a little glycerol, it is converted into the isomeric ionone... This substance boils at 126–128° at 12 mm. 1900Ibid. LXXVIII. ii. 375 In order to separate and detect the α- and β-ionone, the crude ketones are boiled with a little alcohol and an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite. 1929Encycl. Brit. Moore Vitamin A x. 100 The synthesis of vitamin A from β-ionone obviously requires the formation of a longer side chain to the trimethylcyclohexenyl ring. 1971New Scientist 6 May 351/2 The pleasant-smelling ionones are breakdown products of carotenoids. b. ψ-ionone (pseudoionone), C13H20O, a third isomer which can be cyclized to form α- and β-ionones.

Templeton Introd. Chem. Terpenoids & Steroids iii. 46 Similarly ψ-ionone.., obtained by condensation of citral with acetone, cyclizes under acidic conditions to α- and β-ionones, which are found in Nature. |
