iron lung
1. A kind of respirator for giving prolonged artificial respiration mechanically, consisting of a metal case that fits over the patient's chest or trunk with an air-tight aperture for the neck (and limbs), so that air may be forced into and out of the lungs by producing rhythmic variations in the air pressure in the case. orig.
