Ishmael|ˈɪʃmeɪəl| [A Heb. proper name Yishmāﻋē'l ‘God will hear’. See also Ismaelian.] Proper name of the son of Abraham by Hagar; hence, allusively: An outcast; one ‘whose hand is against every man, and every man's hand against him’ (Gen. xvi. 12), one at war with society.
