A woman who is very famous, fashionable, or successful at a particular time, esp. (chiefly U.S.) a glamorous, vivacious, or sexually attractive actress, model, etc., or (chiefly Brit.) a young, rich woman who has achieved celebrity because of her socialite lifestyle. Cf. it pron. 1g.
Originally (with the) referring to the U.S. actress Clara Bow (1905–65) and her roles in such films as It (1927) and The Wild Party (1929).
