juddite Min.|ˈdʒʌdaɪt| [f. the name of John Wesley Judd (1840–1916), English geologist: see -ite1.] A mineral of the amphibole group (see quots.).
1908L. L. Fermor in Rec. Geol. Survey India XXXVII. 212 The optical characters of the mineral leave no doubt that it is a new variety of the amphibole group; I propose to name it juddite in honour of Professor J. W. Judd, F.R.S., and as a respectful tribute from a former student. 1963W. A. Deer et al. Rock-Forming Min. II. 369 Although Bilgrami (1955) considered it appropriate to classify the manganese-rich alkali amphibole juddite..with the richterite group, it has been included here in the eckermannite-arfvedsonite series. The mineral has a high content of Na..and high Fe+3, as well as high Mn, and the formula (Na2·5Ca0·5)(Mg2·5Mn1·0Fe + 3 / 1·0 )Si7·5Al0·5O22(OH)2 is typical of the eckermannite-arfvedsonite group: it is suggested that the mineral may be adequately characterized by the name manganarfvedsonite. 1970Mineral. Mag. XXXVII. 708 It may thus be concluded that the juddites generally refer to (manganoan) magnesioriebeckite compositions. |
