A large fish trap built with stakes, common along the coasts of the Malay Peninsula. Also transf., a building erected over one.
1878F. McNair Perak & Malays ix. 93 The kaylongs are made of hurdles composed of strips of bamboo, some five feet long, fastened closely together with rattans.1900W. W. Skeat Malay Magic v. 315 Kelong is the name given to one of the kinds of fishing-stakes (something like weirs) common on the coasts of the Peninsula.1953R.
