A tree having a relatively thin primary stem and branches; also attrib. or as adj. Hence leptoˈcaulous a.; ˈleptocauly n., development of this type. Cf. pachycaul.

I use this name to indicate the modern tree with relative[ly] slender primary axis and branches in contrast with the pachycaulous cycad.Ibid. 393 The leptocaul, or modern tree, thus comes to dominate in height and spread and distribution.., forming the modern forests.1964E.
