long-haired, a. (Stress variable.) Also long haired, longhaired. [f. long a.1 + haired a.] Having long hair; spec. applied, at various times, (a) to Merovingians; (b) (freq. derog.) to æsthetes and intellectuals; (c) to cats with long fur; (d) to classical (as opposed to popular) music and musicians; (e) to beatniks and hippies. Sometimes without reference to the actual length of the hair: with or of intellectual or æsthetic pretensions. Spec. long-haired chum (see quot. 1890).
