A. n. The Salishan language of the people of the Puget Sound in Washington state.
Formerly called Puget (Sound) Salish (cf. Salish n.). The first dialect of Lushootseed to be studied was Nisqually (cf. Nisqually n.).
1976T. Hess Dict. Puget Salish 275 Lushootseed, the Salish language spoken in the vicinity of Puget sound. 1986Language 62 113 Lushootseed, a Salishan language, appears to allow only one overt NP per clause. 2002Sci. Amer. Aug. 84/3 Lushootseed, a nearly extinct language of the Puget Sound area, is almost unique in its use of reduplication in three different forms—as prefix, suffix, and even as root.
