A. n. An insect of the family Lygaeidae of dark or brightly coloured mainly plant-feeding bugs (heteropterans), some of which (e.g. the chinch bug) are agricultural pests.

Howard Insect Bk. 310 The Lygæids are distinguished from other bugs chiefly by the membrane of the front wing, which has four or five simple veins, and by the antennæ, which are inserted low down on the side of the head. 1962C.
