[a. Pg. macaco monkey, ape (whence macaquear to ape); cited (in the form macaquo) by Marcgrave Hist. Nat. Brazil (1648) 227 as the name used in Congo for this species of monkey.]
1. Originally, a South African monkey incidentally described by Marcgrave in his Natural History of Brazil, and after him by various writers on zoology. Subsequently applied to any monkey of the genus Macacus (either in its earlier or later extension); = macaque.
