Maccabee Jewish Hist.|ˈmækəbiː| [ad. L. Maccabæ-us, Gr. Μακκαβαῖος, the epithet of the Jewish patriot Judas. ‘The source of the name is uncertain, but it is most natural to connect it with maqāb, ‘hammer’.’ 1883 Encycl. Brit. XV. 130/2.] A supporter or successor of Judas Maccabæus, the leader of a religious revolt against Antiochus IV, 175–164 b.c., as recorded in the Books of the Maccabees.
