‖ madre, n. (ˈmadre, Sp. maðrə) [It., Sp.] Mother. Chiefly in exclamatory phrases, as Madre de Dios (It. Madre di Dio) [lit. ‘mother of God’], Madre mia! [lit. ‘mother mine’] (cf. Mamma mia s.v. mamma n.1 d).
