1. The feast of St. Martin, 11 Nov. Formerly sometimes Martinmas in Winter, for distinction from the feast of the translation of St. Martin, 4 July.
In Scotland one of the two term-days recognized by common law. In many parts of England it was the usual time for hiring servants, and fairs were often held on this day. It was also common to slaughter cattle at Martinmas to be salted for winter provision.
