mesonychid, n. and a. Brit. |ˈmɛzəʊˌnʌɪkɪd|, U.S. |ˈmɛzoʊˌnaɪkəd|[see also meso- comb. form.] Forms: also with capital initial. [‹ scientific Latin Mesonychidae, family name (E. D. Cope 1875, in Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 447) > comb. form + ancient Greek ὄνυξ nail (see onycho- comb. form) + -idae (see -id suffix3).] A. n. A member of the extinct family Mesonychidae of carnivorous ungulates, known from fossils of the middle to late Palaeocene epoch.
