Nikkei index, stock average, etc., (an index of) the relative price of representative shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, calculated since 1974 by the newspaper. Formerly (now only unofficially) also Nikkei Dow(-Jones) average, etc. Cf. Dow-Jones n.
The index was originally calculated (from 1949) by the Tokyo Stock Exchange itself.
