A temporary cope, usu. made of sand or plaster of Paris, in which part of a pattern is bedded while the final mould is made of the upper, exposed portion.

Smith Birmingham iii. 33 The patterns still lie on the sand of the ‘odd side’, as it is termed. 1903Work 11 July 364/1 It is necessary, when the mould is commenced, either to block up the half of the flask to a level with the parting line on the pattern, or to sink the same into a bed of sand as far as its greatest diameter. This bed of sand is known as a match or ‘oddside’, and it has importance as a time-saver. 1928W. Rawlinson Mod.
