-one, suffix Chem. [Gr. -ωνη feminine patronymic.] a. An ending used unsystematically in forming the names of chemical derivatives, as in acet-one (Gmelin 1848: see ketone), mellone, quinone. b. In the systematic nomenclature proposed by Hofmann 1866, the formative of the names of hydrocarbons of composition CnH2n-4, as in propone C3H2, quartone C4H4, pentone or quintone C5H6, sextone C6H8, etc. These are seldom used.
