1. The eighth part of the carucate or plough-land varying from 10 to 18 acres, or more widely, according to the system of tillage, etc.; a bovate.
The carucate being the extent of land ploughed by one plough, with its team of eight oxen, an eighth of this was considered as the share of each ox of the team. Holders of less than a carucate united with their neighbours in the use of a co-operative plough, to the team of which each furnished as many oxen as he held oxgangs: see quot. 1425. (In quot. c 1375 strangely used to render L. jugerum juger.)
