palapa, n. U.S.|pəˈlæpə| [a. Mexican Sp. palapa, orig. a name for the palm Orbignya cohune, later also used of its leaves and branches.] A traditional Mexican rustic shelter roofed with palm leaves or branches; also used of any structure built in imitation of this, esp. on a beach. Freq. attrib., esp. in palapa bar, a bar built in such a style.
