para-influenza Biol.|ˌpærəɪnflʊˈɛnzə| Also parainfluenza. [f. para-1 + influenza.] Any of a group of paramyxoviruses which resemble the influenza viruses and include the one causing croup; (orig. classed as myxoviruses before paramyxoviruses were recognized as a separate group). 1959C. H. Andrewes et al. in Virology VIII. 129 (heading) Para-influenza viruses 1, 2, and 3: suggested names for recently described myxoviruses. Ibid. 130 The following names are accordingly proposed: Sendai (including HA2). Myxovirus para-influenzae 1 (Para-influenza 1). CA virus: Myxovirus para-influenzae 2 (Para-influenza 2). HA1: Myxovirus para-influenzae 3 (Para-influenza 3). 1959Brit. Med. Bull. XV. 221/2 It seems..that the Far Eastern strain of para-influenza 1 virus (Sendai) is endemic in laboratory mice and very probably pathogenic for pigs and man also. Ibid. 222/1 Para⁓influenza 2. This virus was called CA (croup-associated) by Chanock (1956). It was independently described by Beale and his colleagues as the virus of acute laryngo⁓tracheobronchitis of children. 1965C. Andrewes Common Cold xi. 98 Para-influenza infections are mainly seen in children in whom they cause respiratory infections of all degrees of severity up to fatal pneumonia. 1974Nature 23 Aug. 650/2 As in vivo hybridisation seems to have permitted a human tumour to become..unusually lethal in the hamster,..similar mechanisms may be implicated in human cancer, particularly when such fusing agents as parainfluenza viruses are prevalent in man. |
