parasuicide, n.|ˌpærəˈs(j)uːɪsaɪd| [f. para-1 1 + suicide n.2] The action of making an apparent attempt at suicide by deliberately harming oneself, but without actual death as the desired result; an instance of this. Also, a person who has carried out, or is likely to carry out, such an action.
1969N. Kreitman et al. in Brit. Jrnl. Psychiatry CXV. 747/1 The ‘attempted suicide’ patient is not usually addressing himself to the task of self-destruction, and rarely can his behaviour be construed in any simple sense as oriented primarily towards death. To designate this act, which is like suicide yet is something other than suicide, we now propose the term ‘parasuicide’. 1971Brit. Jrnl. Psychiatry CXIX. 283/1 A bet on the football pools has, of course, much remoter chances of success than a bet on a horse-race, but parasuicides showed no special preferences for more or less hazardous gambling pursuits. 1977N. Kreitman Parasuicide v. 88 Parasuicides present a great deal of psychiatric symptomatology of a neurotic or depressive nature..and the symptomatology is more prevalent immediately after an attempt than at follow-up. 1981Brit. Med. Jrnl. 1 Aug. 337/1 The incidence of parasuicide rises steeply in adolescence. 1984Times 20 Oct. 3/7 The study covers parasuicides—self-injury and drug overdoses—using data collected by the regional poisoning treatment [centre] in Edinburgh, for the years 1968 to 1982. |
