pedon Soil Sci.|ˈpɛdɒn| [a. Gr. πέδον ground, earth.] A notional column of soil that extends vertically from the surface to the parent material and is of sufficient area (usu. at least a square metre) to be representative of the surrounding soil and its horizons.
1960Simonson & Gardiner in Trans. 7th Internat. Congr. Soil Sci. IV. 128 Nature of the Pedon. It has recently been proposed that the term, pedon.., be used as a generic term for small basic soil entities. [Note] The term was proposed by Guy D. Smith. Ibid. 129 A pedon consists of a small volume of soil which includes the full solum and the upper part of the unconsolidated parent material.., is usually less than 2 meters in depth, and has a lateral cross section that is roughly circular or hexagonal in shape and between 1 and 10 square meters in size. 1972J. G. Cruickshank Soil Geogr. iii. 76 Pedons have such minimal horizontal area that often they fail to reflect important features of the larger soil body. 1973Thompson & Troeh Soils & Soil Fertility (ed. 3) xvi. 369 Soils with large variations in their properties within short horizontal distances are allowed to have pedons as large as 10 sq m..so that their properties may be fully represented. |
