‖ penultima|pɪˈnʌltɪmə| [Lat., properly pænultima, fem. of pænultimus penultimate (sc. syllaba or nota), f. pæne almost + ultimus last.] The last syllable but one (of a word or verse). In quot. 1776, the last but one of a series of notes.
