‖ Perameles Zool.|pɛrəˈmiːliːz| [mod.L. (G. St. Hilaire) f. Gr. πήρα bag, pouch + L. mēles, mēlis a marten or badger.] A genus of small marsupials of Australia and New Guinea, typical of the family Peramelidæ, or true Bandicoots. Hence peraˈmelid, an animal of this genus, a perameles; peraˈmeline a., belonging to the sub-family containing Perameles; peraˈmeloid a., akin to or resembling Perameles.
