periotic, a. (n.) Anat.|pɛrɪˈɒtɪk| [f. Gr. περί around + οὖς, ὠτ- the ear, ὠτικ-ός of the ear.] Surrounding the ear: applied to those bones of the skull (prootic, epiotic, and opisthotic) which constitute a protective case or capsule for the internal ear; usually confluent or entirely fused, forming the petrosal or petromastoid portion of the temporal bone. ellipt. as n.
