[a. F. péristyle (1554 in Hatz.-Darm.), ad. L. peristȳlum, peristȳlium, in Gr. περίστῡλον n., neuter of περίστῡλ-ος having pillars all round, surrounded by a colonnade, f. περί around + στῦλος pillar.]
A row of columns or colonnade surrounding a temple or other building, or a court, cloister, etc.; less properly, the court or space having round it such a row of columns.
