a. Pertaining or relating to light (orig. applied to a supposed ‘fluid’ constituting the matter of light; cf. electric fluid). So ˈphoticated a. Obs., ? impregnated with ‘photic fluid’; ˈphotics n. pl., (a) the science of light and its intrinsic properties (sometimes used instead of optics, which properly denotes the science of sight); (b) see quot. 1875.
