Any of three isomeric compounds of formula C8H6O2 having two formyl groups bonded directly to a benzene ring; spec. the ortho isomer, a yellow crystalline solid.
1886Jrnl. Chem. Soc. L. 455 By the oxidation of phthalic alcohol with chromic mixture, a thick, viscid oil is obtained containing phthalaldehyde, phthalide, and unaltered phthalic alcohol.
