[‹ the name of Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1880–1967), German-born physical fitness specialist, who developed the exercises and apparatus.] I. Compounds. 1. attrib. Designating or relating to a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and to enhance mental awareness and control of body movement, originally (but now not always) using specialized apparatus. Also: designating techniques and equipment used in performing such exercises. Pilates' own name for the system was contrology.
