Any of a family of vines yielding grapes used in wine-making; the grape of these vines. Also, wine made from Pinot grapes.
The principal varieties are the Pinot Noir |nwar| (black), used chiefly in making red Burgundy and Champagne, the white-wine-producing Pinot Blanc |blɑ̃| (white) or Chardonnay |ʃardɔne|, and the Pinot Gris |gri| (grey), a black grape from which white wine is made.
