plasmodesma Bot.|plæzməʊˈdɛzmə| Also anglicized as ˈplasmodesm |-dɛz(ə)m|. Pl. plasmodesmata; also -desmæ, ‖ -desmen, -desms; (erron.) -desma. [a. G. plasmodesma, pl. plasmodesmen (E. Strasburger 1901, in Jahrb. f. wissensch. Bot. XXXVI. 503 (sing. form on p. 607)): see plasmo- and desma.] A narrow thread of cytoplasm that passes through cell walls and affords communication between plant cells.
1905Amer. Naturalist XXXIX. 220 A new point of view was introduced into the discussion by the very important paper of Strasburger, in 1901. He considered the protoplasmic connections as sufficiently clearly differentiated structures to rank as organs of the cell and proposed for them the name plasmodesmen. 1925E. B. Wilson Cell (ed. 3) i. 103 It is probable that an important part in the coördination of the cell-activities is played by direct protoplasmic connections between cells (‘cell⁓bridges’, ‘plasmodesms’). 1927Fritsch & West Treat. Brit. Freshwater Algae (ed. 2) 40 The pit-membrane in such cases is probably traversed by plasmodesmae. 1931Stain Technol. VI. 127 (heading) A technic for demonstrating plasmodesma. 1934L. G. Livingstone in Amer. Jrnl. Bot. XXI. 707 The only way to arrive at a satisfactory understanding of the true nature of plasmo⁓desmata in the living plant is to study the cell walls in an unaltered state. 1935― in Ibid. XXII. 75 The word plasmodesma is proposed for the singular, to designate an individual structure, and plasmodesmata is used in the plural sense. 1941Bot. Rev. VII. 254 Plasmodesmata generally run straight from cell to cell, and only in the neighborhood of intercellular spaces or pit membranes of narrow pits are the outer plasmodesmata curved. 1951F. Drouet in G. M. Smith Man. Phycol. viii. 163 Species of Stigonema have trichomes which in age become multiseriate throughout; the spherical or depressed-spherical cells are connected by strands of protoplasm usually considered to be plasmodesmen. 1966Protoplasma LXI. 82 In longitudinal sections of the plasmodesms the real continuity of the cytoplasmic membranes can be observed. 1975Ann. Rev. Plant Physiol. XXVI. 13 Despite other suggestions, the word plasmodesma has continued to be used to describe a protoplasmic connection. Ibid. 14 Plasmodesmata have been described in angiosperms, gymnosperms, pteridophytes, bryophytes, and many algae. Hence plasmoˈdesmatal a., of, pertaining to, or being plasmodesmata.

Linskens Pollen Physiol. & Fertilization ii. 41 The peripheral archesporial cells show plasmodesmatal links with the tapetal cells, and these in turn with the cells of the inner wall layer of the anther. 1975Ann. Rev. Plant Physiol. XXVI. 15 There are considerable technical difficulties involved in obtaining reliable estimates of plasmodesmatal frequency. |
