[f. pledge v. + -ee.]
1. One with whom a pledge is deposited; a pawnee.
1766Blackstone Comm. II. xxv. 396 In case of goods pledged or pawned upon condition, either to repay money or otherwise; both the pledgor and pledgee have a qualified, but neither of them an absolute, property therein. 1800Acc. Bks. in Asiat. Ann. Reg. 59/2 The whole amount due to the pledgee must be paid before the pledge can be demanded. 1869Smith's Dict. Gr. & Rom. Antiq. 917/1 The pledger could also sell the thing pledged,..but such sale did not affect the right of the pledgee. 1875[see pledger 1].
