plessite, n. Min.|ˈplɛsaɪt| [ad. G. Plessit (Reichenbach 1861, in Ann. Phys. CXIV. 269), erron. f. Gr. ‘πλέω, πλέσσω voll machen, füllen’ (cf. πλήσσειν to strike, πλήθειν to become full): see -ite1.] An inhomogeneous mixture of kamacite and taenite found in some iron meteorites.
1891Amer. Jrnl. Sci. XLII. 66 These physical and chemical correspondences justify, I think, the conclusion that in the Welland siderolite there are but two distinct nickel-iron alloys, viz: kamacite and tænite; and that the so-called plessite is merely thin alternating lamellæ of kamacite and tænite. 1926Proc. R. Soc. A. CXII. 633 A comparison photograph in which the kamacitic-taenitic specimen was mounted on the crystal holder below the plessitic specimen established the complete identity of the lines from the plessite with those from kamacite and taenite separately. 1940Phil. Mag. XXIX. 561 The α2-material will be the granular structureless form of plessite as distinguished from the form of plessite which contains fine crystals of kamacite and tænite in octahedral arrangement. 1976Nature 23 Sept. 302/2 The size and shape of the ε-kamacite, taenite and plessite components are consistent with membership of chemical group IVA in the classification scheme of iron meteorites. |
